Eye Camp at Wahrinong Village, West Khasi Hills, Yi Meghalaya Chapter

Christian University (Nutrition Dept), the Congregation of Christian Brothers
and Bansara Eye Hospital collaborated in conducting a one day Eye Camp for all
the residents of an earmarked Khasi Village. The Eye Camp screened for
Vitamin A deficiency in children below 5 Years and also screened for cataract
cases in the general population of the Village. Three persons were diagnosed
with cataract and will receive free cataract surgery at Bansara Eye Hospital.
Yi Meghalaya provided food and transportation to the volunteers of the Camp and
also assisted with the administrative and logistical arrangements during the
screenings.
Induction of new Chair and Co-Chair of Yi- Meghalaya Chapter for the Year 2018-19 by Chair North-Eastern Region Ms Pallavi Chumki Barua
The new Chair and Co-Chair of
Yi Meghalaya for the Year 2018-19, Mr Atiar Singh Dey and Ms Mayfereen Ritathiang
respectively, were formally inducted by Chair North-Eastern Region Ms Pallavi
Chumki Barua at an event held at the Heritage Club, Shillong, in the presence
of other Members of Yi Meghalaya. The formal induction was followed by a
wide-ranging discussion, over drinks and dinner, between Chair NER, the new
Chair and Co-Chair and Members of the Chapter. Pertinent views were offered and
discussed by each of the individuals present on the future road map for the
Chapter, prospects and hurdles and enhancement of Membership.
‘Breaking Free’ initiative for empowerment and spreading self-awareness amongst young girls at St. Jospeh’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong - Yi Meghalaya Chapter
The Initiative was conducted
by Yi Meghalaya in collaboration with Grassroot, Shillong, for the 7th and
8th Standard girls of the School. The focus of the Initiative
was to imbibe the girls with self-confidence and encourage their dreams to
become leaders in their chosen fields. The Initiative was supported by the
Chief Minister’s Youth Development Scheme 2017-18. The programme was divided
into six sessions, of which three sessions on ‘Leadership’, ‘Doing what you
love’ and Pockets of Happiness’ were conducted by individual Members of Yi
Meghalaya. One session on self-defence was conducted by ten members of the All
Meghalaya Karate-Do Association. The acclaimed Shillong Band ‘Soulmate’
conducted another special session on ‘Doing what you love’ which included a
stirring performance of motivational songs.
Interactive Session on ‘Policy, the Business Sector and Youth Entrepreneurship’ with Atul Kulkarni (Member Board, IIM, Shillong and former OSD, Ministry of Shipping, GOI) - Yi Meghalaya Chapter
The Session was well attended
by Shillong based young and enterprising entrepreneurs from across different
fields. The Guest Speaker opened by giving an insightful talk on the Central
Government’s focus on infrastructure as the vehicle for developing the
economies of the North- Eastern States. During the Q&A, the key prospective
infrastructure projects for the Region were discussed, along with hurdles and
proposed solutions; as well as implications of the new GST regime for transport
of goods, across State lines, into and from the North-East. The Session
culminated with a more informal interaction over drinks and dinner, during
which both the Guest Speaker as well as invitees expressed their appreciation
at having had the opportunity to participate in an extremely energetic session
which extended beyond an hour and a half of the allocated time.
